Information taken from a 1997 Interview in Vintage
Guitar Magazine:
VG: What are you using to get the sounds on
"Unshaven"?
ES: 4 X 12" cabinets with EV's, I just use two. I've
got a really rare old Mesa, it's my baby. It's a 300
Series, 200 watts, but I use it on half-power and it's
so sweet. I have three and they're all different,
just like guitars. It's great for a three-piece.
VG: What guitars do you use? It sounds like Strats
and Teles.
ES: If it's a Tele, it's usually borrowed. When I
was 15, Dickey Betts gave me a '55 Strat and that's my
main baby. It's got a C neck and it's wider than most.
I've got a pure '57 and it's so much thinner. The
'55 has so much low end, it's not glassy as most
Strats. It's just cool. The first guitar Dickey gave
me, when I was 13, is a 335 dotneck from 1958. It
used to be Duane's. Dickey said, "Here's a special
guitar, it's what Duane played before he got his
Paul." He and dad were hanging out and Dickey took me
under his wing and started giving me guitars abnd
telling me stuff. I got to sit in with them all the
time. I used to stand by Greg, next to Dickey,
playing one of the guitars he gave me. It was like
heaven. Those two drummers play so good together.
It's like sitting on top of a volcano.
VG: What else do you have?
ES: I've got a '57 strat. I just picked up a '62
Silvertone. I've got a reissue Tele and I string it
with huge, huge strings and tune it to D. I toured
the Gibson factory and picked up a Les Paul Special
Issue. I've got amps all over the place. I've got a
blond Super. I've got one of David Gilmour's Hiwatt
amps from The Wall tour. I've got a Matchless 4-109
and a Matchless tremelo tank that they made for about
6 months. I've got a 1970 100-watt Marshall head.
I've got amps from here to Nashville in storage.
